JEAN vON BARGEN ROOT, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, NOMA, PMP, ASSOC. DBIA

Principal | Director of Sustainability

Since joining MWA in 2002, Jean has sought out architecture projects that tackle sustainability and social justice. As Principal and the firm’s first Director of Sustainability, she brings over 20 years of architecture experience in water and wastewater design. Her purposeful design approach focuses on building resilient communities through inclusive and environmentally responsible infrastructure.

Jean’s belief in providing quality design and healthy spaces has led her to civic and public works facilities, wastewater treatment plants, airport terminals, and other transportation work. A powerful advocate for sustainable design practices, she spearheads LEED-certified projects. With outreach as a cornerstone for inclusive design, Jean engages with her team, clients, and end-users to build projects that reflect the needs of the community and environment.

As a Principal, Jean leads by example and takes an active role in mentorship. She guides aspiring architects with continued education and support, creating a safe environment that promotes growth and innovation. In addition to her leadership efforts, Jean promotes inclusive and sustainable industry practices with firm-wide initiatives. Currently pursuing JUST Certification, she hopes to hold the firm accountable for transparency in design.

In the coming years, she will continue to seek out challenging design work that embodies AIA’s 2030 Commitment to make measurable contributions to carbon neutrality and clean water accessibility. Jean was a 2022 Energy Trust of Oregon NetZero Fellow, completing research on removing barriers to Net Zero commercial-industrial development.
