Medical services and clinics are part of a growing range of amenities and services located in airports. The Dr. Lawrence Smookler Medical Clinic at San Francisco International Airport was relocated from Terminal 2 to the International Terminal. This allowed the renovation of Terminal 2 (for which MWA was part of the design/build team) to proceed. The clinic serves not only the airport but also the surrounding community including the hospitality services.
One of the design team’s primary challenges was to manage the phasing of the clinic’s relocation to keep the disruption to airport activity to a minimum and to ensure that installation of the utilities did not breach Customs security which operates on the floor below. MWA’s design is integrated into the context and standards of SFO as well as the standards of Catholic Health West, who operates the clinic.
