Adcock Joyner Apartments
In 1915, Adcock Joyner was built as a hotel conveniently located directly across from Oakland’s City Hall in the historic district. In 1993, the building was converted to affordable housing to better meet the city’s needs. After serving residents for 30 years, Adcock Joyner received funding for exterior and interior renovations. The MWA design team refreshed this historic building while maintaining its original charm.

AN OCCUPIED RENOVATION
The renovation prioritized residents’ safety and included a structural upgrade and exterior improvements to the fire escape, new roofing, new HVAC units, new windows, elevator upgrades, and building security enhancements.
Focusing the budget where it would make the most significant impact, the design team redefined the entrance with a pop of color and playful patterned tile.
INTERIOR IMPROVEMENTS
Within the building, MWA designed 10% of the units to be ADA-accessible. Renovations to each residential unit included bathroom surfaces, fixtures, flooring, electrical, plumbing, and kitchen surfaces and appliances. Designers brightened the interiors by replacing worn-down materials in the entrance, offices, and laundry room with new finishes. The first floor features 2,500 SF of commercial space.
