New Columbia occupies an 82-acre site where the Housing Authority of Portland Oregon undertook the development of a livable, mixed-income community that will enhance the quality of life of both its residents and of the adjacent neighborhood.

Chestnut Court
This HOPE VI, 72-unit affordable, mixed-use, housing project continues the dramatic revitalization of West Oakland.


Town Center and Courtyards at Acorn
Two blocks of mixed-income, multi-family rental housing, plus a recreation and community center surrounding a “Town Center” brought new vitality to this formerly notorious public housing development in West Oakland.




Britton Courts
Located in a residential San Francisco district, Britton Courts transforms a large, irregularly shaped parcel into a small community of affordable rental units with on-site recreational and community services.




Cecil Williams Glide Community House
This multiple award-winning, nine-story apartment building provides transitional housing in an uplifting and supportive environment. Public art, community spaces and support services enrich the program.


Mariners Ridge Townhomes
A new planned townhome community MWA designed for one of the few available undeveloped tracts of land in Marin County, Mariners Ridge Townhomes was sponsored by the nonprofit developer Bridge Housing.


Birch Street Housing Rehabilitation
A comprehensive modernization of East Oakland low-income apartments built in 1969. The Oakland Housing Authority showcased this rehabilitation to HUD as a model project .

Columbia Boulevard Water Treatment Plant
MWA has designed and constructed the new Central Control Facility for the City of Portland's only waste treatment plant, meeting LEED gold standards.


Crescent City Water Pollution Control Facility
Michael Willis Architects (MWA) is the architect for the complete design of the Crescent City Water Pollution Control Facility, a complex of three wastewater treatment buildings sited on two acres along a bay on the coast of Northern California.


LOTT Satellite Water Reclamation Plant and Water Park
MWA was instrumental in developing the master plan for the reclaimed Water Plant to facilitate ease of circulation, public access and the viability of future commercial development.



River Road Peak Flow Facility
This new facility restores the park’s relationship with the neighborhood as well as restoring visual access to the Willamette River.


Sammamish Valley Water Production Facility
The project will provide reclaimed water for irrigation of a golf course and several large farms currently using water directly from the Sammamish River.


Ukiah Wastewater Treatment Plant
MWA completed design guidelines for this 3.1 MGD treatment plant located in Northern California.


Watsonville Recycled Water Treatment Facility
Located adjacent to the Watsonville Wastewater Treatment Facility, on the banks of the Pajaro River, the new facility will recycle up to 10,000 acre-feet of water per year from the wastewater treatment plant, to replace current use of groundwater.



City of Salem Pollution Control Facility Design Guidelines
Selected along with the Black & Veatch Consulting Engineers team, MWA will provide several aspects of planning and architectural services for the $400 million dollar, 15-year City infrastructure expansion. 



Joseph Jensen Filtration Plant Oxidation Retrofit Program
Master plan, design guidelines and architectural design for a 200-acre, 750 mgd water treatment plant for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.


Alameda County Water District Water Quality Laboratory
The latest technology is being incorporated into the design of this new laboratory building located adjacent to the ACWD headquarters.


Marin Municipal Water District’s Water Quality Laboratory
This new facility will provide laboratory and administrative space in an open plan and an enhanced work environment. The new lab was designed using sustainable design principles.


San Francisco International Airport Wastewater Treatment Plant - Process Building
This new Process Building will increase the plant's capacity to handle wastewater produced by the airport and surrounding communities.


Sunol Valley Water Treatment Plant Expansion
Master planning and architectural design for the expansion of the water treatment plant and administration building plus a series of new buildings. (Consultant to MWH, Prime Engineer)


Central Contra Costa Sanitary District Water Quality Laboratory
The exterior of this new water quality laboratory building blends in with the plant’s existing architecture, while the interior was planned along an innovative modular approach.


Orinda Water Treatment Plant Expansion
This plant had not been modernized since its 1934 opening. MWA designed new buildings and renovated existing buildings to new uses.



North Richmond Water Reclamation Plant
Built through a joint venture between Chevron Corporation and the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD), the Plant conserves drinking water by recycling wastewater for industrial use.


Sobrante Ozonation Facility
This 25,000 square foot new clean water facility serves as a flagship to the community and is open to both staff and the general public.











Moscone Convention Center Expansion
The Moscone Center III, a three-floor exhibition and conferencing facility, is designed to work as both a stand-alone facility as well as overflow space for blockbuster conventions. (A Joint Venture with Gensler and Kwan Henmi).


Oakland Police Department, Eastmont Precinct
The new Eastmont Police Precinct is the City of Oakland’s first community-based police facility, designed to foster greater interaction between police and residents.


African American Museum and Library
In adapting the Charles Green Library to become the African American Museum and Library at Oakland, MWA has carefully integrated new uses into the historic structure.



Milpitas City Hall
Tenant department interiors for a new 57,000-square foot civic building that houses approximately 165 people. MWA worked with the lead architect, Studios Architecture, who was responsible for shell-and-core design.


Alameda County Family Support Division
Design/build seismic upgrade and renovation of a 50,000-square-foot, 1940's former bank building into modern office facilities.


Pacific Bell Park
MWA provided construction administration services to design architect HOK Sport for the new San Francisco Giants baseball stadium.


County of Alameda Self Sufficiency Centers
The Self Sufficiency Centers have been designed to convey a sense of optimism to their clients and provide an environment that helps motivate them toward independence.


Emergency Operations Center/ Fire Dispatch Center
MWA completely renovated the existing Fire Dispatch Center and added the Emergency Operations Center to the complex. We configured offices in the the current Fire Dispatch Center and coordinated its electronic control systems with the adjoining EOC.




Hallidie Plaza Elevator
An important urban space in downtown San Francisco, Hallidie Plaza is a sunken plaza located next to the busy intersection of Market, Powell, and Fifth Streets. The Hallidie Plaza Elevator is a steel column whose sculpted form gives a new focus to this important public area.



Oakland City Hall
Multiple award-winning seismic retrofit and rehabilitation of a National Register Historic building, once the tallest building west of the Mississippi (in association with VBN Architects).











Port of Oakland Field Support Services Center
A new 65,000-sf complex designed to consolidate the Port of Oakland’s maintenance department and allow for future expansion.



Muni Metro East Maintenance Yard
MWA is the lead architect for the design of a new light rail maintenance and operations facility for MUNI on a 13 acre site in southeastern San Francisco. We are involved in site planning, building design, public meetings and coordination with artists



San Francisco International Airport International Terminal Building
As a joint venture architect, MWA has been part of a blended team working on all aspects of design from planning through construction administration.



Adeline Maintenance Facility
MWA was the design architect on the design/build team to expand the East Bay Municipal Utility District’s administration and corporation yard complex, spanning four blocks.













Martin Luther King, Jr. Plaza North Oakland Senior Center
MWA converted the auditorium wing in the former Merritt College building, a National Register historic building, which had lain vacant for 27 years, into a senior center. Recipient of a design award from the California Preservation Foundation.

In designing the interiors for Hitachi, a genetic coding firm in Palo Alto, MWA faced the complex challenge of integrating the older building’s infrastructure with the client’s unique technical requirements.

Jack Singleton
The Hayward Women’s Shelter commissioned MWA to design a daycare facility for the children of abused women. Today, the Jack Singleton Infant Care Center houses up to 30 children daily while their mothers work.

Chalmers Heights Revitilization
A master plan for revitalization of a 27-1/2 block residential district in eastern Detroit.


North Central Plan for Saint Louis
The north central neighborhoods create a district that links many St. Louis assets--the Grand Center Cultural District, Saint Louis University and the Central West End--to the region's downtown.



Saint Louis Old Post Office Square District
A critical element of St. Louis' downtown Development Action Plan, The Old Post Office Square is meant to spark revitalization of downtown's traditional retail core.




LeMoyne Gardens Urban Revitalization Demonstration Project
Through MWA's careful site planning and construction of new residential units and community service and retail buildings, LeMoyne Gardens will be transformed from its present debilitated state into a mixed-income neighborhood.










City of Carnation Waste Water Treatment Facility
Carollo Engineers, along with MWA, were selected to provide design of the new treatment facility sited at the confluence of the Tolt and Snohomish Rivers.



Piers 27-31
San Francisco
Piers 27-31 will form a new recreational, mixed-use complex featuring a new YMCA, office and retail space (in association with Johnson Fain).


Easter Hill - HOPE VI
The master plan and design for the redevelopment of this Richmond Public Housing complex locates fifty new detached for-sale houses next to existing home ownership areas while 250 new rental townhouse-style units occupy the southern part of the site to join a small group of existing, renovated townhouses.


Mandela Gateway
This new mixed-use development in West Oakland provides 168 units of affordable housing and 22,200 square feet of retail space.  The 2-story townhouses will be situated on top of a parking podium.


Pavilion Mixed-Use Development
This $200 million development will provide 400 units of affordable and market-rate rental housing, and 100,000 square feet of exhibition, meeting and ballroom space. (In association with HOK)


Thomas Berkley Square
A new 100,000-square-foot building that will house office and meeting space for the North Alameda County Self Sufficiency Center and Department of Social Services.
