Mandela Gateway HOPE VI and Townhomes

West Oakland, CA

Mandela Gateway HOPE VI is a new mixed-use, mixed-income community replacing 46 units of decrepit public housing at the West Oakland BART Station.

The project includes 168 units, community rooms, laundry and maintenance rooms and management offices. The transit-oriented development was planned to offer the maximum number of townhouses. Fourteen townhomes serve as a medium density buffer of for-sale housing between high-density Mandela Gateway and an historic neighborhood. The five-acre project site features 16,000-square-feet of retail space along 7th Street, providing needed community services while serving to screen the parking from view.
