AIA/HUD Secretary's Award
Chestnut + Linden Courts was selected to receive the 2005 Community by Design Award, given jointly by The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
The citation will be presented in Las Vegas at the 2005 AIA National Convention and Design Expo on Friday, May 20, 2005.

15 Years (1988 2003) / New Housing Director / Five New Associates
2003 has been a busy year for Michael Willis Architects. The firm is celebrating its 15-year anniversary, five employees have been elevated to associates, and a new Housing Director, Larry Mayers, AIA has joined the firm.

Mandela Gateway Groundbreaking
The groundbreaking ceremony, sponsored by BRIDGE Housing and the Oakland Housing Authority was held in May 2003. Michael Willis Architects developed the master plan and architectural design for this 168-unit affordable family housing and mixed-use complex.

New Lab Designed for Comfort, Productivity, Efficiency
WaterWorld Magazine featured an article on Michael Willis Architect’s successful design of the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District’s Water Quality Laboratory in their June 2003 issue. Our design of this lab and administrative office space focuses on incorporating efficient and comfortable working environments for lab and office personnel while adhering to sustainable design principles. UrbanLand “Waterworks”

Oakland’s New Museum/Library
UrbanLand, in its May 2000 publication, announced the renovation and adaptive reuse of the Charles Greene Library for the African American Museum and Library at Oakland, a national historic landmark. Significant design challenges had to be overcome in order to bring this 17,000-square-foot building back to life. View the article. |

AIACC 2003 Merit Award for Design
The Cecil Williams Glide Community House earned a Merit Award in the 2003 AIACC Awards for Design. “The designers celebrated the strong social program as it was executed in the context of the city and recognized the ability for the client to get a project of this scale built within an urban fabric.”
